Modified e-bike operator facing multiple charges
Posted October 7, 2026
Nottawasaga OPP arrested and charged the driver of a modified e-bike with criminal and higway traffic infractions following a stop on Young Street in Alliston.
On October 3, shortly before 7 pm, officers in Alliston observed an individual operating an electric bicycle on a sidewalk before entering the roadway, crossing multiple lanes of traffic, and proceeding into a commercial plaza.
Officers entered the plaza and located the individual. During the investigation, officers determined the electric bicycle no longer had pedals attached and was being operated solely by an electric motor. As a result, the vehicle met the definition of a motor vehicle under the Highway Traffic Act.
The operator was unable to provide a driver's licence, vehicle permit, or proof of insurance and verbally identified themselves using a false name. The individual refused to identify themselves and was placed under arrest.
A 47-year-old male from New Tecumseth was charged with:
-
Obstruct Peace Officer
-
Operation While Prohibited under the Criminal Code (five counts)
-
Failure to Comply with Release Order (two counts)
-
Driving While Under Suspension
-
Owner Operate Motor Vehicle Without Insurance
-
Drive Motor Vehicle - No Permit
-
Drive Motor Vehicle - No Plates
-
Drive Motor Vehicle - No Vehicle Identification Number
-
Drive Without Proper Headlight - Motorcycle
The accused was released from custody and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Bradford at a future date. The vehicle was impounded for 45 days.
"The Nottawasaga OPP reminds all road users that vehicles operating on Ontario roadways must meet applicable legislative requirements. Modifying an e-bike beyond its approved specifications may result in it being classified as a motor vehicle, subjecting the operator to licensing, insurance, registration, and other legal obligations."
